Stefan Ciara is an Associate Professor at the University of Warsaw’s Department of Auxiliary Science of History, Source Studies, and Methodology of History. Since 1979, he has been affiliated with the University of Warsaw’s Historical Institute, holding roles such as senior assistant and assistant professor before becoming Associate Professor in 2009. His academic journey includes a Master’s (1972) and PhD (1986) from the University of Warsaw, postgraduate studies in Archival Science at Nicolaus Copernicus University (1975–1976), and habilitation in 2004. He has held leadership roles, including Acting Head of the Department of Historical Auxiliary Sciences (1994–1999), and conducted traineeships in Vienna (1992, 1994). His research focuses on Polish archival history, university archives (especially in Lviv and Kraków), and historical methodology, with notable works like Kariera rodu Wejherów 1560-1657 (1980) and Archiwa a uniwersytety w Krakowie i Lwowie w latach 1877-1918 (2002). His publications span archival practices, biographies of key figures, and methodological reflections in historiography.
Education background: Master’s at the University of Warsaw (1972), PhD (1986), postgraduate Archival Science studies (1975–1976). Professional history includes roles at the University of Warsaw Library (1972–1973), Central Archives of Historical Records (1973–1979), and the Historical Institute since 1979. His work emphasizes archival modernization, inter-institutional collaboration, and the historical role of archives in Polish academia.
Research interests include Polish archival history, historical methodology, university archives in Galicia, and the role of archives in cultural preservation. His articles analyze archival networks, biographies of archivists (e.g., Helena Polaczkówna), and the evolution of academic institutions in Lwów and Kraków. He has contributed to understanding 19th–20th-century Polish historiography and the challenges faced by scholars during transitions between administrative regimes.
