Professor Stefan Brink PhD FRSE is a Professor of Scandinavian Studies at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), specializing in interdisciplinary research on Viking and medieval Scandinavia. His roles include academic leadership at UHI, honorary positions at the University of Cambridge, and research affiliations with Uppsala University and the Heinz Heinen Centre for Advanced Studies. He has held previous positions at Aberdeen, Uppsala, and Bergen universities. His research focuses on Old Norse philology, place-names, Norse law and mythology, and the Christianization of Scandinavia. He has published extensively and received numerous awards, including the Westinska Prize and the Leverhulme Trust Fellowship. Brink is editor of the Viking and Medieval Scandinavia journal and leads international projects translating early Scandinavian laws.
- Education: PhD in 1990 from Uppsala University.
Research interests include societal structures, landscape studies, and early Germanic languages. He has supervised over 30 PhD students and currently mentors Andrea Freund. His work bridges archaeology, linguistics, and history, exploring topics like slavery, place-names, and legal systems. External memberships include fellowships at the Royal Swedish Academy and Royal Society of Edinburgh, and editorial roles in academic series.
