Stefan Bauer is a Lecturer in Early Modern History at King’s College London’s Department of History. He holds a Habilitation in Early Modern History from the University of Fribourg (2018) and a PhD in Combined Historical Studies from the Warburg Institute (2004). His research focuses on Renaissance historiography, religious controversies, and the intersection of humanism with Reformation dynamics. Bauer has held academic positions across Europe, including at the University of York, Warwick, and Royal Holloway. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and currently serves as Councillor and Trustee of the Royal Historical Society and a member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council Peer Review College. His work explores topics such as papal historiography, forgery analysis, and the uses of historical narratives in religious polemics.
Education includes a Habilitation (2018), PhD (2004), and two MAs (1998/1999) from institutions in Switzerland and the UK. His professional service spans roles in academic governance, including co-convening the Institute of Historical Research’s Seminar on Italy, 1200–1700, and leading the Marie Curie Alumni Association’s UK Chapter.
Research interests include the methodology of religious historiography, the cultural history of censorship, and the role of historical documentation in early modern religious conflicts. His award-winning publications challenge traditional narratives about papal history and Renaissance humanism. Bauer’s work frequently engages with interdisciplinary approaches, combining textual analysis with social and institutional history.
