JJ Bauer

JJ Bauer is a Teaching Assistant Professor and Visual Resources Curator in the Department of Art History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also serves as Adjunct Faculty in the School of Information and Library Science. Her work bridges art history, visual resources management, and digital humanities methodologies.

Her research focuses on American and European culture from 1895-1919, with particular emphasis on design, architecture, film, gender studies, theater, and digital humanities. She has developed innovative approaches to teaching film censorship history and modern architecture, examining how visual culture intersects with social, political, and historical contexts. Her work frequently explores gender representation and censorship in film history through courses like ARTH 401: Film Censorship.

Dr. Bauer's publications demonstrate her expertise in architectural history and digital art history methodologies. Her recent work includes 'Mapping Modern Architecture' (2020) which explores digital approaches to architectural analysis, and 'Addendum: Campus Architecture since 1985' (2019), which documents the evolution of UNC Chapel Hill's campus. Her earlier exhibition catalog 'Apocalypse Then' (2000) examined religious iconography from Dürer to the twentieth century.

As an educator, Dr. Bauer teaches courses including Introduction to Architecture, The Film Experience, Modern Architecture, Film Censorship, Early Modern and Modern Decorative Arts, and alt-Methods: Digital Art History. She is an advisor for students pursuing dual degree Masters in Art History and Library/Information Science.

Dr. Bauer conducts 'The Campus at Chapel Hill' Architecture Tours through Heart of the Hill Tours and continues to develop the Artists' Studio Archives Project. She maintains an active digital presence through her 'Digital Art History Thursdays' blog, where she explores emerging digital methodologies in art historical research and pedagogy.
