Stavros Panageas is the Robert D. Beyer '83 Term Chair in Management and Professor of Finance at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. His research focuses on asset pricing and macroeconomics, with significant contributions to understanding the connections between heterogeneity, inequality, and financial markets. Previously, he taught at the Booth School of Business of the University of Chicago, the London School of Economics, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Professor Panageas earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2005 and a Lizentiat in Economics from the University of St. Gallen in 1997. His academic journey has positioned him at the forefront of research at the intersection of finance and macroeconomics.
Panageas's research spans multiple critical areas in modern finance, particularly focusing on asset pricing, investment theory, and macroeconomics. His work often examines how heterogeneity across individuals and firms affects financial markets and macroeconomic outcomes. A significant portion of his research investigates the relationship between income, preference, and belief heterogeneity and asset prices, building on foundational work by Grossman and Shiller. His recent work has expanded into areas such as pandemic response economics, technological disruption's impact on asset valuation, and financial crises dynamics.
Analysis of Professor Panageas's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on fundamental questions in asset pricing and macro-finance. His work demonstrates a sophisticated integration of theoretical modeling with empirical relevance, particularly in understanding how financial frictions, investor heterogeneity, and macroeconomic forces interact. A notable trend in his research is the increasing attention to real-world policy implications, as evidenced by studies on zero-COVID policies, government debt sustainability, and financial crisis management. His publications in top-tier journals across economics and finance reflect the interdisciplinary nature and high impact of his contributions.
Professor Panageas has received numerous prestigious awards for his research, including:
- 2012 Smith-Breeden Prize for the best capital markets paper in the Journal of Finance
- Utah Winter Finance Conference Best Paper Award
- Four nations Cup
- Rodney White Research Grant
- Two Geewax, Terker Prizes in Investment Research from the Rodney L. White Center for Financial Research
- Paul Alther Prize for the best undergraduate thesis at the University of St. Gallen
As an active member of the academic community, Panageas serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Critical Finance Review, and was previously an associate editor of the Review of Asset Pricing Studies. His work has been presented at leading universities and conferences worldwide, demonstrating the broad recognition of his contributions. He is also a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and has been a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.
