National and Kapodistrian University of Athensمعرفی
Stavros Ioannidis is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy of Natural Sciences at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, within the Department of History and Philosophy of Science (IFE). He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Bristol (2012), supported by an AHRC Fellowship. His research focuses on the philosophy of biology, particularly mechanistic explanation in evolutionary and developmental contexts, and the metaphysics of science, including debates on causation, laws, and dispositional modality. He co-authored Mechanisms in Science: Method or Metaphysics? (Cambridge UP, 2022) and edited Levels of Reality in Science and Philosophy (2022). As Principal Investigator of the Hellenic Foundation-funded MECHANISM project (2018–2021), he explores multi-level mechanistic explanations and scientific methodology.
Ioannidis is Editor-in-Chief of the open-access journal αnalytica and a founding member/vice-president of POND: Network of Philosophy of Science around the Mediterranean. His academic contributions include peer-review roles (e.g., THEORIA journal) and critical reviews of influential works in metaphysics and philosophy of science. His scholarly output reflects a commitment to bridging methodological and metaphysical perspectives, with a focus on interdisciplinary dialogue between science and philosophy.
- Education: PhD in Philosophy (University of Bristol, 2012), AHRC Fellowship
Research Interests: At the core of his work lies the analysis of mechanistic explanations in biology, emphasizing their methodological and metaphysical dimensions. He interrogates the role of laws in scientific inference, the nature of causal necessitation, and dispositional modality. His metaphysical inquiries extend to debates on relations in science, multi-level realities, and the ontology of scientific concepts like governing laws and powers. He also engages with historical philosophical disputes, such as those between Bradley and Russell on relations, to contextualize modern scientific metaphysics.
Articles Trends: Recent publications reflect a dual focus on reviewing foundational texts (e.g., Anjum & Mumford, Hüttemann) and advancing original research on mechanisms, metaphysical frameworks, and causal theories. His 2022 work highlights multi-level mechanistic explanations and their metaphysical underpinnings, while earlier papers (2017–2019) defend mechanistic approaches in biology and critique metaphysical assumptions in scientific practice.
- Scientific Awards: AHRC Fellowship (2012)
Advising & Grants: While no formal advisees are listed, he has led the MECHANISM grant project. His roles in academic governance (POND, αnalytica) and peer review underscore his contributions to institutional frameworks in philosophy of science. His research integrates methodological and metaphysical questions, often addressing how scientific practices inform and are informed by philosophical concepts.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at UoA, he leads αnalytica as Editor-in-Chief and contributes to POND, fostering collaboration across Mediterranean institutions in philosophy of science.
