Staffan Ingemar Lindberg is a Full Professor of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg and Founding Director of the V-Dem Institute. His work focuses on comparative politics, democratization processes, and political institutions, particularly in Africa. He leads the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) project, a global research infrastructure analyzing democratic governance. Lindberg holds a PhD from Lund University (2005) and has held academic positions at Kent State University and University of Florida before joining Gothenburg in 2010.
His research explores electoral systems, democratic resilience, autocratization, and the interplay between democracy and biodiversity. Key contributions include the Democracy and Elections in Africa (2006) and co-edited volumes like Why Democracies Develop and Decline (2022). Lindberg has secured major grants, including the ERC Consolidator Grant (2017–2022) and Wallenberg Academy Fellowship, and serves on editorial and advisory boards for prominent journals and institutions like the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond.
Award-winning scholar, Lindberg’s work emphasizes quantitative methods and large-scale data collection.
