She has extensive professional experience across print, broadcast, and online journalism platforms.
Her research focuses primarily on journalism history, with specialized expertise in literary journalism, biography, and the history of Baltimore journalism. Dr. Spaulding has made significant contributions to the field through her examination of historical journalistic practices, gender studies in media, and the work of influential figures like H.L. Mencken. Her scholarship frequently explores the intersection of journalism, cultural identity, and urban history, with particular attention to Baltimore's media landscape.
Dr. Spaulding's recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on historical journalism analysis, with particular emphasis on Baltimore's journalistic heritage and the work of H.L. Mencken. Her research spans diverse topics including food editorials, farewell narratives from former Baltimore Sun employees, and the Afro-American's World War II coverage. A significant portion of her recent work involves oral history documentation, particularly her comprehensive H.L. Mencken House Oral History Collection completed in 2022.
Dr. Spaulding has directed and completed the 'H.L. Mencken House Oral History Collection,' documenting first-hand experiences of community members who led efforts to preserve the H.L. Mencken House as a museum and historic landmark. This project involved conducting and producing seventeen interviews recorded between 2014 and 2020, which are now available through Digital Maryland. She has also collaborated with former Baltimore Sun reporter Antero Pietila on 'Race Goes To War,' examining the Baltimore Afro American's coverage of World War II. Her scholarly work has been published in prestigious journals including Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, American Journalism, Journalism History, Journalism Studies, and Literary Journalism Studies.
