Education:
- B.S., Chemistry, Central Michigan University
- M.S., Environmental Engineering & Science, Clemson University
- Ph.D., Environmental Engineering & Chemistry, Johns Hopkins University
- Postdoctoral Associate, Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Yale University
Research Interests:
Dr. Sivey’s work investigates environmental organic chemistry and drinking water treatment, particularly the mechanisms of disinfection byproduct formation during chlorination. His lab explores halogenation pathways, solvent effects on reaction rates, and the environmental fate of agrochemicals. Key areas include:
- Disinfection byproduct formation in chlorinated waters
- Environmental impacts of herbicide safeners
- Reaction kinetics of phenolic compounds and aromatic compounds
Publications:
His recent work highlights advancements in understanding chlorine-mediated reactions, such as the role of methanol as a carrier solvent and the application of stable isotope labeling. His research also addresses emerging contaminants like dichloroacetamide safeners and their toxicity to non-target organisms.
Awards:
- TU Presidential Faculty Award for Excellence in Research (2023)
- Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award (2020)
- NSF CAREER Award (2017)
Advising & Grants:
Dr. Sivey leads NSF-funded projects investigating drinking water safety and has published extensively in Environmental Science & Technology and related journals. His teaching spans Analytical Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis, and Environmental Science courses.
Labs & Teams:
The Sivey Lab at Towson University focuses on aqueous environmental chemistry, collaborating with institutions like Yale and Johns Hopkins. Research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to water treatment challenges.
