Professor Klein's research spans multiple areas within medieval studies, with a strong focus on Anglo-Saxon literature and culture. Her work explores the intersections of gender, power, and literary representation in early medieval texts. She has made significant contributions to understanding how legendary women of high social status functioned as imaginative figures in Anglo-Saxon literature and culture. Her research also delves into medieval hagiography, religious iconography, the history of sexuality, and feminist theory as applied to pre-Conquest English texts. Klein's scholarship reveals how Anglo-Saxon writers used royal women as mediatory figures to negotiate tensions among different peoples, institutions, and belief systems.
Professor Klein's publications demonstrate a consistent focus on gender dynamics in Anglo-Saxon literature, particularly examining queenship and female representation. Her work combines historical, literary, and feminist approaches to illuminate the ideological complexities of medieval texts. The recurring themes in her scholarship include the role of women in social reform, the representation of femininity in religious contexts, and the intersection of gender with power structures in early medieval England.
