Stacy Caplow is a Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School, where she has served as the inaugural dean overseeing clinical and experiential education for over a decade. Her expertise spans asylum/refugee law, clinical education, criminal law/procedure, immigration law, lawyering skills, and trial advocacy. She holds a J.D. and LL.M. from NYU School of Law and a B.A. from Smith College.
Her research focuses on immigration court reform, state legislative strategies for deportation relief, and clinical pedagogy. Notable contributions include co-authoring Multidefendant Criminal Cases: Federal Law and Procedure and articles in leading journals like the Boston University Public Interest Law Journal. Caplow has held significant roles, including president of the Clinical Legal Education Association and board membership with the New York Immigrant Representation Study Group.
Professionally, she served as Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, Director of Training at the Kings County District Attorney's Office, and Legal Aid Society attorney. She co-directs the Safe Harbor Project and has international experience, including a Fulbright in Ireland and clinical program development in Hong Kong, Armenia, and Georgia.
Her advocacy extends to improving immigrant representation and criminal justice reform, with recent work emphasizing state-level legislative solutions to address deportation inequities. Caplow’s teaching integrates practical skills with theoretical rigor, reflecting her commitment to bridging academia and real-world legal practice.
