Stacie Brensilver Berman is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Teaching and Learning department at New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. She serves as Residency Director and Social Studies Content Mentor in the NYU Teacher Residency program. Her academic career bridges teaching practice with research, having previously spent ten years as a New York City public school teacher.
Dr. Berman holds a PhD in Social Studies Education from NYU Steinhardt (dissertation honored with a 2019 Steinhardt Outstanding Dissertation Award), a BA in History from the University of Pennsylvania, and MAs in Social Studies Education (NYU) and History (Hunter College).
Her research focuses on LGBTQ+ history inclusion in K-12 curricula, project-based learning strategies, and navigating controversial topics in education. Key areas include textbook analysis, teacher professional development, and policy advocacy for inclusive education. She has presented widely at national conferences and collaborates with educators to develop curricula on LGBTQ+ history, civil rights, and student rights.
Notable publications include her 2021 monograph LGBTQ+ History in High School Classes in the United States since 1990, co-authored books on project-based learning (2024), and articles in Social Education and History News Network. Her work emphasizes practical strategies for teaching sensitive historical topics while fostering student engagement and critical thinking.
