Stacey Kaltman serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine and Assistant Director of the Center for Trauma and the Community (CTC). As a licensed clinical psychologist and trauma researcher, she leads NIMH-funded work addressing mental health needs of trauma-exposed Latino immigrants in primary care settings. Her dual focus bridges clinical practice, research, and medical education within academic psychiatry.
Dr. Kaltman’s research centers on trauma psychology with intense specialization in Latino immigrant mental health. She investigates social isolation, cultural barriers to care, and integrated treatment models for PTSD and depression in primary care. Her work examines how ethnic identity buffers trauma effects, develops telemedicine co-management interventions for diabetes-depression comorbidity, and analyzes social networks of trauma-exposed immigrants. This research consistently targets health disparities through culturally responsive frameworks.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications (2024-2016) reveals three dominant trends: 1) Development and evaluation of integrated mental health interventions for Latino immigrants in safety-net clinics; 2) Exploration of cultural identity as protective factor against trauma-related disorders; 3) Technology-enabled solutions including telemedicine and virtual learning for both patient care and medical education. Her methodology favors mixed-methods approaches, combining RCTs with qualitative analysis of patient and provider perspectives to address systemic barriers.
Dr. Kaltman directs an active NIMH-funded grant on trauma-exposed Latino immigrants while teaching medical students and residents about trauma impacts, doctor-patient communication, and psychosocial aspects of care. Her educational work includes systematic reviews on motivational interviewing training and technology-enhanced patient-centered interviewing curricula. As Assistant Director of the CTC, she oversees community-based trauma research initiatives focused on underserved immigrant populations, with recent projects examining breast cancer impacts on Latina caregivers and social network dynamics.
