Stacey Maurer

Dr. Stacey N. Maurer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), within the College of Medicine. She specializes in Behavioral Medicine and Psycho-Oncology, focusing on body image distress in cancer survivors, telemedicine interventions, and psychosocial aspects of chronic illnesses like solid organ transplant and bone marrow transplant. Dr. Maurer holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Florida and completed her postdoctoral fellowship in Behavioral Medicine at MUSC.

Her clinical practice includes treating patients with chronic medical conditions at the Hollings Cancer Center and the Institute of Psychiatry, emphasizing adaptation to illness and improving quality of life through behavioral interventions. She supervises psychology interns and fellows, particularly in the Charleston Consortium Psychology Internship Program’s Hollings Cancer Center rotation.

Research interests include developing and validating patient-reported outcome measures, telemedicine-based interventions for body image distress in head and neck cancer survivors (e.g., the BRIGHT trial), and integrating behavioral health into cancer care. She is leading efforts to implement distress screening programs at Hollings Cancer Center to enhance supportive care access.

Dr. Maurer’s work spans over 30 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on behavioral medicine, oncology, and telehealth. Her contributions emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration to address psychosocial challenges in chronic illness and cancer survivorship.
