Prof. Stéphanie Dagron was the SNSF Professor of Public Health Law at the University of Geneva’s Faculty of Law until her retirement on 31 January 2016. Her research focused on Global Health Law, examining legal frameworks addressing public health challenges exacerbated by globalization. Key areas included tobacco control via the WHO Framework Convention, human rights in health systems, and cross-border health governance.
Her work analyzed the role of legal instruments (both binding and non-binding) in addressing global health threats like drug-resistant tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases. She led an SNSF-funded project emphasizing the juridification of global health, exploring how state and non-state actors can collaboratively improve health systems through legal mechanisms.
Notable contributions include organizing interdisciplinary workshops on TB ethics and human rights, supervising three doctoral dissertations on international health law topics, and publishing widely on topics like pharmaceutical regulation and migrant health rights. Her team evaluated legal gaps in global health governance and proposed human rights-based solutions.
Prof. Dagron’s interdisciplinary approach integrated human rights theories with public health policy, aiming to strengthen international cooperation and equitable health outcomes. Her legacy includes advancing frameworks for global health equity through legal innovation.
