Stéphane Michonneau

Stéphane Michonneau is Professor of Contemporary History at the Faculty of Arts, Languages and Humanities, University of Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC), specializing in Spanish historical memory, war ruins, and post-conflict societies. His research examines nationalisms, commemorations, and testimonies through the lens of Spain's 20th-century conflicts.

His scholarly focus centers on the material and cultural legacies of the Spanish Civil War, analyzing how sites like Belchite and Zaragoza transform into memory landscapes. He investigates the political uses of war ruins across centuries, transitional justice mechanisms, and the interplay between physical destruction and collective remembrance. Current projects include the ANR Ruins program examining war ruins from the 16th-21st centuries.

Recent publications (2017-2023) demonstrate consistent engagement with Spanish Civil War heritage, exploring memorialization processes, legal frameworks for historical memory, and landscape reconstruction as cultural patrimony. His interdisciplinary approach bridges historical analysis with heritage studies and memory politics.

Michonneau holds significant scientific responsibilities:
