Emmanuel Fureix is a Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Paris-Est Créteil Val de Marne (UPEC), affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences. He serves as Deputy Director of the Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences Research Unit (UFR LLSH) in charge of research since 2022, and was previously co-director of the CRHEC research center (2019-2022). His academic career includes being a Junior Member of the French University Institute (2010-2015) and elected member (alternate) of section 22 of the CNU since 2011.
His educational background includes studies at the École Normale Supérieure (Ulm) where he earned his agrégation in history, followed by a doctorate in history from University of Paris 1 (2003). He was appointed Maître de conférences (Associate Professor) from 2004-2019 before becoming a full Professor at UPEC in 2019.
Fureix specializes in 19th century French and European cultural, social and political history, with particular expertise in visual history, iconoclasm, graffiti, the history of emotions and sensibilities, and the anthropology of politics. His research explores how political phenomena manifest through cultural expressions, material objects, and emotional responses. He has made significant contributions to understanding how political resistance operates through everyday objects and how visual culture shapes political consciousness. His work bridges traditional political history with newer approaches from material culture studies and the history of emotions.
His scholarly output demonstrates a consistent focus on the intersection of material culture, political symbolism, and emotional responses in 19th century France. Recent publications show an evolving interest in object agency within political contexts, examining how everyday items became vehicles for political expression and resistance during periods of revolutionary change. His work connects historical analysis with contemporary questions about political symbolism and public memory.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Prix John Jaffé (Letters and Humanities) from the Chancellorship of Universities (2004)
- Prix Chateaubriand (2009) for "La France des larmes. Mort et politique à l'âge romantique (1814-1840)"
- Junior Member of the French University Institute (2010-2015)
Fureix has served on the scientific evaluation committee of the ANR (SHS3) in 2012 and 2013, and is an active participant in scholarly discourse through editorial roles. He serves on the editorial boards of three journals: Revue d'histoire du XIXe siècle, French History (UK), and Memoria e Ricerca (Italy). He is also on the scientific committee of the Brazilian journal Revista M and the Revue d'histoire culturelle. Since 2016, he has served as President and then Secretary General of the Society for the History of the 1848 Revolution and 19th Century Revolutions. As a prominent scholar in his field, Fureix regularly contributes to public discourse through media appearances on France Inter, France Culture, and Arte, discussing historical perspectives on contemporary issues such as monument politics and democratic tensions.
