Srinivas Janaswamy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Dairy and Food Science at South Dakota State University (SDSU). His research focuses on functional carbohydrates, biodegradable materials, and sustainable applications of agricultural residues. He designs eco-friendly packaging solutions, develops novel carriers for bioactive compounds, and explores plant-based alternatives to address environmental and nutritional challenges.
Education:
- B.S. in Physics, Mathematics, and Electronics from Nagarjuna University, India (1989)
- M.S. in Physics and Education from Regional College of Education, NCERT, affiliated with Mysore University, India (1991)
- Ph.D. in Crystallography from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India (1997)
Research Interests: Janaswamy’s work integrates materials science, food chemistry, and environmental engineering. He investigates starch modification for controlled release of nutrients, lignocellulosic biomaterials for sorbent and packaging applications, and polysaccharide-based systems to combat micronutrient deficiencies. His studies also address water purification using biopolymers and UV-protective film development using agricultural byproducts.
Grants & Mentoring: He leads initiatives like the FAST-REEU program to enhance Native American students' college experiences and prepare them for science and agriculture careers. His research is supported through grants focused on sustainable material development and nutrient retention systems.
Labs & Affiliations: Located at the Raven Precision Agriculture Center, his work intersects with the Department of Agronomy, Horticulture, and Plant Science. He collaborates on projects involving bio-based materials, food safety, and environmental remediation technologies.
