Srdjan D. Antic, M.D. is a Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He holds affiliations with the Institute for Systems Genomics and Stem Cell Institute. His primary research focuses on electrophysiological and imaging studies of neuronal signal processing in prefrontal cortex and neostriatum, with applications to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Key techniques include voltage-sensitive dye imaging, genetically-encoded voltage indicators (GEVIs), and computational modeling using NEURON software.
- Expertise: Dendritic plateau potentials, action potential backpropagation, synaptic plasticity, and voltage imaging
- Key discoveries: Dendritic UP states, sodium spikelet initiation in thin branches, and stochastic nature of apical tuft AP propagation
- Technological innovations: Development of GEVI-based voltage imaging methods
Research interests include understanding how neuronal electrical activity contributes to neurodegeneration, particularly in Alzheimer's disease, and developing optical tools to detect early synaptic dysfunction. The Antic Lab employs multi-site imaging, optogenetics, and acute brain slice techniques to study cortical and striatal circuits.
Notable contributions include the first descriptions of voltage waveforms in dendritic branches during action potential backpropagation and the discovery of dendritic plateau potentials' role in neuronal UP states. Current projects aim to detect Alzheimer's physiological markers using mouse models and improve genetically-encoded sensor technology for neural activity monitoring.
