Spiros Gardelis

Spiros Gardelis is an Associate Professor at the Department of Physics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He holds leadership roles as Director of the Condensed Matter Physics Section and former Director of the Solid State Physics Laboratory. His research focuses on advanced materials and nanotechnology, with expertise in semiconductor physics, nanoelectronics, photonics, plasmonics, and solar cell applications.

Education: B.Sc. in Physics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1988), M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Manchester (1989, 1993). He has held research positions at the University of Cambridge (Cavendish Laboratory), FORTH (University of Crete), and the National Center for Scientific Research 'DEMOKRITOS'.

Research interests include: semiconductor physics, nanoelectronics, photonics, plasmonics, spintronics, MEMS, and photocatalytic applications. His work spans material synthesis, optoelectronic device development, and surface-enhanced spectroscopy techniques.

Recent publications (2023-2025) highlight advancements in: resistive switching in MEMS capacitors, van der Waals heterostructures, plasmonic photonic crystals for SERS sensors, and photocatalysts for environmental remediation. He has over 100 peer-reviewed papers and 2200+ citations.

Professional roles include membership in the Physics Department's internal evaluation committee and Assembly. His lab focuses on translating material science innovations into practical applications like energy storage and biomedical sensors.
