Sotirios Grammatikos

Prof. Sotirios Grammatikos is a Full Professor in Polymers and Composites at NTNU’s Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering. He serves as Scientific Director of the ASEMlab (Laboratory of Advanced and Sustainable Engineering Materials) and leads the Sustainable Composites Research Group. He holds affiliations as an Affiliated Professor at Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden) and Visiting Professor at the University of Western Macedonia (Greece). His roles include Vice-President of the European Society for Composite Materials (ESCM) and Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology.

Education: PhD in Materials Engineering (2009-2013) from the University of Ioannina (Greece), MSc in Chemistry & Technology of Materials (2008-2010), and a Diploma in Materials Science & Engineering (2003-2008). Early career included training at the Hellenic Aerospace Industry (2008) and postdoctoral positions at the University of Bath (UK) and Chalmers University.

Research Focus: Smart polymer composites, green materials, recycling, and sustainability in aerospace, energy, automotive, and infrastructure systems. Key competencies include multifunctional materials, structural health monitoring, and circular manufacturing.

Grants & Projects: Lead/coordinated over 20+ projects, including EU-funded initiatives like H2ELIOS (hydrogen storage for aircraft), AMULET (lightweight materials), and PRecycling (plastic waste management). Total funding exceeds 100 million NOK/SEK/EUR.

Awards: Recognized for research excellence (NTNU 2021), innovation in composite materials (EIT Climate-KIC 2018), and sustained contributions to peer review (2014–present).

Labs & Teams: Directs ASEMlab, a hub for sustainable materials innovation, and collaborates with global networks like the European Lightweight Cluster Alliance and Norwegian Circular Materials Technology Cluster.
