Sophie Cranston is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography and the UG Programme Leader for Geography & Environment at Loughborough University. She holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (2010–2014) and has held academic roles at Loughborough since 2014. Her research focuses on migration, particularly privileged migration, expatriate identities, globalization, and international education. She has contributed to the Royal Geographical Society (RGS-IBG), serving as Chair of its Population Geography Research Group and Secretary of the Population Research Group. She also sits on the Editorial Board of Global Networks and actively participates in academic union activities, including roles as a GYE UCU Rep.
Her work critically examines mobility infrastructures, the global mobility industry, and the intersectional dimensions of migration, including family dynamics and corporate expatriation. She interrogates how categories like 'expatriate' and 'international student' are socially constructed and how migration policies shape global hierarchies. Recent publications explore the impact of the pandemic on global education and the ethical dimensions of researching privileged migration.
Dr. Cranston’s contributions extend to advancing methodologies in migration studies through reflexive and care-focused approaches. She has engaged in collaborative projects on sonic landscapes and belonging, emphasizing how sound mediates identity formation for mobile youth in higher education contexts. Her work bridges theoretical debates with empirical studies, offering insights into contemporary global mobility patterns and their sociocultural implications.
