Dr. Sophie Brassel is a Lecturer in Speech Pathology at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Medicine and Health, where she teaches professional practice education and conducts research on acquired communication disorders. She holds a BAppSc(SpPath)(Hons1), PhD, and is a Certified Practicing Speech Pathologist (CPSP). Her research focuses on virtual reality applications for cognitive-communication rehabilitation following traumatic brain injury.
Brassel's research examines digital health innovations, particularly immersive virtual reality systems for assessment and intervention in neurogenic communication disorders. She investigates how technology can enhance rehabilitation outcomes for individuals with acquired brain injuries. Current projects include cultural adaptation of the Social Brain Toolkit and user testing of VR protocols for communication disorders.
She coordinates and teaches clinical practice courses including CSCD2066, CSCD2067, CSCD3100, CSCD3101, and CSCD5063. Her clinical expertise includes adult swallowing and communication disorders management in public health settings.
Recent publications explore rehabilitation professionals' social media use, peer-mediated interventions, and virtual reality implementation frameworks. Her work has appeared in Journal of Medical Internet Research, American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, and Neuropsychological Rehabilitation.
