Dr. Petra Avramovic is a Lecturer in Speech Pathology at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Medicine and Health, specifically within the Sydney School of Health Sciences. She is an early career researcher, clinical educator, and certified practicing speech pathologist with expertise in communication rehabilitation following acquired brain injury (ABI). Her work bridges clinical practice, digital health innovation, and academic teaching in the field of speech pathology.
Dr. Avramovic completed her Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology) with First Class Honours and earned her PhD within the Acquired Brain Injury Communication Lab at The University of Sydney. Her doctoral research focused on developing and evaluating 'convers-ABI-lity,' an online communication partner training platform for people with traumatic brain injury. This work has evolved into the Social Brain Toolkit, a suite of resources supporting communication for people with ABI.
Her research interests span Communication, Rehabilitation, Digital Health, Artificial Intelligence, Telehealth, Acquired Brain Injury, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Speech Pathology. She has developed expertise in co-designing cognitive-communication interventions with key stakeholders, creating digital health solutions that address real-world communication challenges faced by people with brain injuries. Her work particularly focuses on how digital platforms can facilitate social connection and improve communication skills for this population.
Dr. Avramovic's publication record shows a clear trajectory toward digital health solutions for brain injury rehabilitation, with a particular emphasis on co-designed interventions that address both conversation skills and social media use. Her recent work demonstrates increasing sophistication in integrating artificial intelligence with traditional speech pathology approaches, while maintaining a strong foundation in user-centered design principles. The consistent focus across her publications is on practical, accessible interventions that can be implemented in real-world settings.
