Sophia Y. Lunt is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at Michigan State University, with joint appointments in Chemical Engineering & Materials Science. She is faculty in both the Genetics & Genome Sciences Program and Cell & Molecular Biology Program. Dr. Lunt directs an active research laboratory focused on cancer metabolism and developing novel therapeutic approaches targeting metabolic vulnerabilities in cancer cells.
Dr. Lunt received her B.S. with Highest Honors in Chemistry from Lebanon Valley College (2005) and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Princeton University (2010). She completed postdoctoral training as a DoD Visionary Postdoctoral Fellow with Dr. Matthew G. Vander Heiden at MIT (2010-2015).
Dr. Lunt's research focuses on understanding metabolism's role in cancer proliferation, heterogeneity, and metastasis. Her lab combines mass spectrometry, cell biology, genetic cancer models, and fluorescent agents to investigate metabolic alterations. She aims to design effective, personalized cancer therapies based on metabolic targeting across multiple cancer types including breast, pancreatic, and pediatric brain tumors, with emphasis on how metabolic pathways influence tumor growth, metastasis, and therapy response.
Analysis of Dr. Lunt's recent publications reveals a strong focus on cancer metabolism mechanisms and their therapeutic applications. Her work spans from basic metabolic mechanisms in cancer cells to translational applications, including novel photoactive agents for cancer imaging and therapy. Significant research examines how specific metabolic pathways like serine biosynthesis, pyruvate metabolism, and nucleotide biosynthesis contribute to cancer progression and metastasis.
