Dr. Sophia Hoffmann is a political scientist at the Institute for Intercultural and International Studies (InIIS) within the University of Bremen's Department 8 (Social Sciences). Her research focuses on Middle Eastern international relations, intelligence agency roles in statehood, and humanitarian aid dynamics in conflict zones. She earned her PhD at SOAS, London, with prior degrees from the LSE and University of Sussex.
Her recent work includes the 2019 ZMO Working Papers publication questioning international relations' neglect of intelligence agency studies. She has extensively analyzed migration patterns in Syria and Jordan, authoring the 2016 book Iraqi Migrants in Syria: The Crisis before the Storm. Her peer-reviewed articles explore 'care and control' mechanisms in refugee camps, Turkish immigration policies during the Syrian crisis, and comparative state-building processes in Syria and Israel.
As part of the Collaborative Research Center 1342 'Global Development Dynamics of Social Policy' and the Master's Program in International Relations (MAIR), Hoffmann contributes to Bremen's social science research profile. Her fieldwork-based publications include analyses of Damascus ethnography and Jordanian camp security systems, with collaborations on humanitarian sovereignty frameworks and Middle East political topographies.
