Sonja Amadae is a tenured political scientist and Professor of International and Global History at the University of Cambridge, serving as Director of the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER). She previously held professorships at the University of Helsinki, Central European University, Ohio State University, and Swansea University, and visiting roles at institutions like Stanford and Harvard.
Her research focuses on nuclear war and security, climate change mitigation through collective action, and the impact of AI on catastrophic risk governance. Notably, she led the Food Futures project under the €2.75M Horizon 2020 ATARCA grant, addressing environmental harms via Web 3.0 solutions, and co-authored work on AI and nuclear risk with CSER's Shahar Avin.
Amadae has received recognition such as the Berggruen Research Fellowship and authored acclaimed books including Prisoners of Reason and Rationalizing Capitalist Democracy. She also directs the Global Political and Communication (GPC) MA program, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and securing grants for international student exchanges.
