S. M. Amadae is a Senior University Lecturer and Docent (Adjunct Professor) in Political Science at the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Social Sciences. She is affiliated with the TINT – Centre for Philosophy of Social Science and serves as Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) of the €2.75M ERC Horizon 2020 grant ATARCA, focusing on anti-rival coordination and allocation technologies. Previously, she held an Associate Professorship in International Political Economy at Swansea University. Her research spans neoliberal political economy, nuclear security, computational public sphere dynamics, and systemic discrimination patterns arising from binary markers.
Amadae directs the Global Politics and Communications MA program and edited the student-research anthology Computational Transformation of the Public Sphere: Theories and Case Studies (2020). Her work includes award-winning books like Rationalizing Capitalist Democracy (2003), which won the J. David Greenstone Book Award, and Prisoners of Reason: Game Theory and Neoliberal Political Economy (2016). She has held research fellowships at Stanford University’s CASBS and MIT’s STS program, investigating topics such as cyber threats to nuclear security and illiberal movements in post-1970s neoliberalism.
Her recent publications address nuclear nonproliferation regimes, blockchain applications in sustainability, and Finnish security policy expectations in the 2024 EU elections. Amadae teaches courses on global political economy, media/communication, and the philosophy of politics.
