Prof. Sonia Kleindorfer is an Adjunct Professor at Flinders University's College of Science and Engineering, specializing in organismal systems biology with a focus on animal behavior and evolutionary dynamics in birds and parasites. She holds a PhD from the University of Vienna and has conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Her roles include Director of the Konrad Lorenz Research Center for Behaviour and Cognition, and former Vice-President and Treasurer of the Royal Society of South Australia. She leads BirdLab, an active research group since 2004.
Her research explores prenatal experience in birds, bridging animal behavior, evolutionary biology, and neurobiology. Key achievements include contributions to understanding parasite impacts on Darwin’s finches and behavioral adaptations in avian species. Awards include the Honorary Fellowship from the American Ornithological Society (2020) and the D.L. Serventy Medal (2016).
Teaching focuses on animal behavior, conservation, and evolutionary ecology, emphasizing hands-on, research-driven learning. Professional engagements include collaborations with the Charles Darwin Foundation, consulting in Papua New Guinea’s ecotourism sector, and biodiversity conservation in Fiji.
Notable grants and projects address avian parasite dynamics and conservation strategies. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals on biodiversity and environmental health.
