Sonia Dalkin is a Professor of Applied Health and Social Care Research at Northumbria University’s Faculty of Health & Life Sciences. She co-directs the National Evaluation Team (IDEAS-NET), funded by the National Institute for Health and Social Care Research (NIHR), which focuses on interdisciplinary evaluation of complex health and social care innovations. Her research emphasizes mixed-methods and realist evaluation approaches, particularly in understanding service delivery and organizational dynamics.
Dr. Dalkin holds a PhD in Health Sciences (2014) and has pioneered methodological advancements in realist evaluation, including integrating economic analysis through Realist Economic Evaluation Methods (REEM). Her work addresses the MRC Framework for complex interventions, focusing on cost-consequence analyses alongside effectiveness.
Key research areas include palliative care, long-term conditions, and mental health crisis interventions. She has developed training programs in realist evaluation, influencing practice nationally and internationally. Currently supervising PhD student Robin Hyde on the Advanced Paediatric Nurse Practitioner role evaluation, her projects often involve collaborative partnerships to bridge research and practice gaps.
Dr. Dalkin’s recent publications explore police responses to mental health crises, end-of-life care models, and workforce retention strategies in care homes. She leads the IDEAS-NET Centre, a £3 million NIHR initiative operational until 2030.
