Sonia Angell is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of the Practice at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, with primary affiliation in the Department of Epidemiology and joint affiliation in Environmental Health and Engineering. She also contributes to the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research and serves as Chair of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative’s Food Systems for Health focus area.
Her educational background includes an MD from the University of California, San Francisco, an MPH from the University of Michigan, and a DTMH from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar.
Dr. Angell's research focuses on public health, population health, health equity, systems change, food systems, and planetary health. She investigates the intersection of care delivery and public health, particularly in the context of climate change and noncommunicable diseases. Her work emphasizes policy development, surveillance, and resilience in health systems, especially post-pandemic.
Recent publications highlight her leadership in hypertension care delivery, climate and health equity, food as medicine, and the impact of public health policies on chronic disease. Her research spans high-impact journals like Circulation, The Lancet, Health Affairs, and BMJ Open, with active output through 2025.
