Sonam Tsering is a Senior Lecturer in Tibetan and Director of the Tibetan Language Program at Columbia University's Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures. He previously taught at the University of Michigan and remotely instructed students at Yale and Ohio State University using live video technology. Originally from Rebgong (Qinghai, PRC), he later lived in the Tibetan exile community in India, where he founded and edited Bod kyi Dus bab (Tibet Times newspaper). He holds a BA in Social Anthropology from the University of London.
His research focuses on Tibetan language, cultural preservation, and Himalayan studies. Key publications include The Historical Polity of Repgong (2011), translations of works like Clear Sky and Red Earth (2004), and analyses of historical and religious themes such as the missionary Ipolito Desideri. His writing spans academic articles, translations, and contributions to Tibetan-language media in exile communities.
