Nicholas Bartlett is an Assistant Professor of Contemporary Chinese Culture and Society at Barnard College, affiliated with Columbia University’s Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures. He specializes in anthropology, with a focus on medical anthropology and psychoanalysis in China.
Educational Background:
- BA from Pomona College
- MIA from Columbia University
- PhD in Medical Anthropology from UC Berkeley and UCSF
His research explores addiction recovery, labor, civil society, and psychoanalysis in post-reform China. Current projects examine group relations conferences and their role in negotiating authority and collective life.
Teaching: Courses include Culture, Mental Health and Healing in East Asia, China’s Long 1980s, and China and the Politics of Desire. Office hours are held at 321-A Milbank Hall, Barnard College.
