Sol Juarez is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor (Docent) in Public Health Sciences at the Department of Public Health Sciences, Stockholm University. Her work focuses on understanding health disparities, particularly among immigrant populations in Sweden, through rigorous epidemiological research and policy analysis.
Dr. Juarez completed her academic training with:
- B.A. with honors in Sociology (2006) at Universidad Complutense of Madrid and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC)
- Ph.D. in Sociology with European Mention (2011) at Universidad Complutense of Madrid and CSIC
- Postdoctoral research at the Centre for Economic Demography and the Unit of Social Epidemiology at Lund University
Dr. Juarez's research program centers on health inequities, with particular emphasis on the "healthy migrant paradox" in European contexts. She investigates social determinants of health, migration and health outcomes, maternal and child health patterns, life-course epidemiology, and the impact of welfare policies on population health. Her work often employs large-scale register data from Sweden to examine how social structures and policies shape health trajectories across different population groups.
Analysis of Dr. Juarez's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on immigrant health disparities using Sweden's comprehensive population registers. Her work spans perinatal health outcomes, mortality patterns, mental health, and the effects of social policies on health equity. A distinctive feature of her research is the examination of how duration of residence and age at migration interact with health outcomes, providing nuanced insights beyond simple migrant-native comparisons. Her methodological approach combines epidemiological rigor with social science perspectives to unpack the mechanisms behind observed health patterns.
Dr. Juarez actively mentors the next generation of public health researchers, supervising both master's and doctoral students. She has secured significant research funding as Principal Investigator for multiple projects:
- FORTE-project: Explaining COVID-19 mortality among immigrants in Sweden (2022-2024, 4,970,000 SEK)
- VR-project: The unintended consequences of Swedish parental leave policy (2019-2022, 5,604,000 SEK)
- FORTE-programme: Social determinants of health among individuals with foreign background (2017-2022, 18,000,000 SEK)
Dr. Juarez leads and contributes to several research groups and initiatives including ParLeHealth, SMASH (Social determinants of health among individuals with foreign background), and the Research Group on Demographic Dynamics. These collaborative efforts bring together multidisciplinary teams to address complex questions at the intersection of migration, social policy, and population health.
