Matthew Wallace is an Associate Professor in Social Inequality at the University of Salford and holds an affiliation as an Associate Professor and Affiliated Researcher at Stockholm University's Department of Sociology (Demographics Division). His primary research focuses on migration, population health, and social inequality, with a particular emphasis on migrant mortality patterns and health disparities across generations.
Wallace leads major projects, including a 1.5 million EUR ERC-funded study on the immigrant morbidity-mortality paradox and a FORTE-funded project analyzing lifespan inequalities among migrants in Sweden. He has held roles at the French National Demographic Institute (INED) and the University of Liverpool, and received the European Demographer of the Year award (2022) and an ERC Starting Grant (2023).
His research spans migration's impact on life expectancy, intergenerational health outcomes, and pandemic mortality disparities. Key publications address migrant mortality advantages, second-generation health challenges, and the role of socioeconomic factors in mortality.
