Sofie Pelsmakers is a Professor of Architecture at Tampere University's Faculty of Built Environment, leading the ASUTUT research group. She focuses on sustainable, inclusive housing design addressing societal challenges like climate change, aging populations, and urbanization. Her interdisciplinary work combines architecture, urban planning, and energy policy.
Education: PhD (2016, University College London), MRes in Building Energy Demand Reduction (2012, UCL), MSc in Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies (2000, UEL), and Bachelor of Architecture (1997, Hasselt University).
Research Interests: Holistic housing solutions for resilience, social equity, and well-being. Current projects include SOLTECH (smart technology for aging), Kotiluontoon (nature access for elderly), and RESCUE (crisis-ready living environments). She also leads Arch4Change, an open-access platform integrating climate change into architectural education.
Awards: Honorary Mention for Teaching Excellence (2021).
Grants & Mentorship: Academy of Finland-funded projects on teleworking impacts and crisis management. Mentors over 20 researchers in ASUTUT, emphasizing individual and collective growth.
