Essi Nisonen is a Doctoral Researcher and Architect (MSc) at the Faculty of Built Environment, Tampere University, specializing in Architecture. She serves as the Responsible Teacher in Sustainable Housing Design and is affiliated with the Sustainable Housing Design research group ASUTUT, part of the Spatial Socialization and Environmental Citizenship Research Collective (SPECS) and the Interdisciplinary Network of Environmental and Sustainability Education Research (SIRENE). Her research focuses on integrating sustainability and transformative learning in architectural education, particularly exploring values and cultures influencing architects' roles in addressing the climate crisis.
Education: Master of Architecture from Tampere University (2022), supervised by Prof. Sofie Pelsmakers and Dr. Jenni Poutanen. Her master's thesis, Architecture as Sustainability – Educating the Transformative Practitioner, was a finalist for the Wuorio Prize.
Research Interests: Architectural education reform, climate crisis adaptation, sustainability frameworks, and the integration of empathy and care into professional identity. Her work emphasizes systemic change in education to align with planetary boundaries and eco-social justice.
Awards: Honorable Mention in the Gerda & Salomo Wuorio Prize (2023), multiple 2nd and 3rd prizes in design competitions (2018–2021), and recognition for contributions to sustainable housing and urban design.
Activities & Grants: Supported by the Erasmus+ Arch4Change project. Active in organizing and presenting at conferences such as the International Conference on Circularity in the Built Environment and the ATUT Annual Symposium. Serves on committees for architectural research and education initiatives.
