Dr. Sofie Morbée is a postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University's Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, Department of Experimental Clinical and Health Psychology. She completed her PhD in 2023 with research focused on motivating and demotivating parenting and coaching in youth sports, working within the Self-Determination Theory framework under the supervision of prominent researchers including Maarten Vansteenkiste and Leen Haerens.
Her research interests center on sport psychology, motivation, and mental health applications, with particular expertise in Self-Determination Theory. Her work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications in coaching contexts and public health crises. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she became a key contributor to Ghent University's Motivation Barometer research initiative, investigating how motivational factors influenced adherence to public health measures and vaccination behaviors.
Her publication record demonstrates expertise in both sport psychology contexts (youth sports, coaching dynamics, athlete motivation) and health psychology applications (pandemic response, vaccination behavior, mental health). Her research employs diverse methodologies including experimental designs, longitudinal studies, and multi-informant approaches, often collaborating with an extensive network of researchers at Ghent University.
Her recent work shows emerging trends toward examining the intersection of sport psychology principles with broader health behavior applications, particularly in understanding how motivational factors influence complex health decisions during public health crises. She has contributed to high-impact publications in journals including Psychology of Sport and Exercise, Motivation and Emotion, and BMC Public Health.
- Principal investigator on multiple pandemic-related motivation studies
- Key contributor to the Psychological Science Accelerator Self-Determination Theory Collaboration
- Active participant in sport psychology research focusing on coach-athlete relationships
Dr. Morbée's research program demonstrates strong continuity between her doctoral work in sport motivation and her current applications in public health contexts, establishing her as an emerging scholar bridging these domains through the lens of Self-Determination Theory.
