Sofia Nyström is an Associate Professor of Clinical Immunology and Senior Consultant in Clinical Immunology and Transfusion Medicine at Linköping University's Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences. She bridges research and clinical practice with a focus on immune dysregulation in inborn errors of immunity and autoimmune disorders.
Her research spans immunological mechanisms to population-level studies, with significant contributions to understanding immune responses in viral infections (particularly COVID-19), precision medicine approaches in multiple sclerosis, and pathophysiology of antibody deficiencies. Recent work examines HIV immunology, chronic lymphocytic leukemia complications during pandemics, and epigenetic regulation in immune disorders.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals dominant trends in clinical immunology (73%), pandemic response (60%), and immune dysregulation mechanisms (53%). Key subfields include SARS-CoV-2 hospitalization risk stratification, HIV-immunity interactions, IgG subclass deficiencies, and long-term immune alterations post-infection.
She is affiliated with the Medical Inflammation and Infection Center (MIIC), which focuses on infections and inflammatory conditions affecting human health. Her clinical work contributes to diagnosing patients with both inborn and acquired immunodeficiencies.
Nyström collaborates extensively across Linköping University and with national healthcare systems, particularly through register-based cohort studies and multi-center clinical investigations. Her research directly informs precision medicine approaches for immunocompromised patients during public health crises.
