Sofia Grunditz is a Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood Education at the Department of Child and Youth Studies, Stockholm University. Her work focuses on historical and contemporary preschool practices, with a particular emphasis on visual research methods, naptime rituals, and child-adult interaction. She teaches courses in play, teacher training, and education history within the Programme in Early Childhood Education.
Her research integrates ethnomethodology, visual anthropology, and film studies to analyze preschool environments through historical and comparative lenses. Key themes include the material culture of education (e.g., movable beds in preschools), visual ethics in documenting children, and the sociocultural dimensions of childhood.
Grunditz has pioneered the 'visual remake' methodology, using drawings and digital tools to preserve visual data integrity during analysis. Her work often examines archival materials like films and photos from the 1900s–1970s, revealing continuities and changes in preschool policies and practices.
Her publications span topics from naptime peer cultures to historical analyses of preschool architecture and child observation practices. She has also collaborated on projects exploring children’s perceptions of scientists through art-based methods.
