Sofia Bartlett

Sofia Bartlett serves as the interim scientific director for Clinical Prevention Services at the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and holds an appointment as Assistant Professor (Partner) in the University of British Columbia's School of Population and Public Health. Her work bridges academic research and public health practice with a focus on infectious disease prevention and control.

Dr. Bartlett's educational background includes a BSc (Hons) in Science from James Cook University (2010), a PhD from the University of New South Wales (2017), and a postdoctoral fellowship at UBC as a CIHR Health System Impact Fellow (2018).

Dr. Bartlett's research focuses on addressing knowledge gaps around sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STIBBIs), emerging/re-emerging infections like SARS-CoV-2 and tuberculosis, and the intersection with substance use and incarceration. She employs community-based participatory methods combined with implementation science to optimize access to testing and care for marginalized populations including people who are unstably housed, people who inject drugs, and people in prison. Her work particularly emphasizes using integrated data sources to enhance surveillance and evaluation of public health interventions for STIBBIs. She has published extensively on hepatitis C care in correctional settings, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on infectious disease services, and vaccination uptake among marginalized populations.

Her publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to understanding infectious disease transmission, treatment effectiveness, and health disparities, with a particular emphasis on vulnerable populations. Recent work has focused on SARS-CoV-2 antibody testing methodologies, vaccination uptake among people who use drugs, and the impact of direct-acting antivirals for hepatitis C.

Dr. Bartlett actively contributes to public health policy and programming through her leadership roles at BCCDC and research collaborations. She provides scientific leadership for STIBBI and TB surveillance and programming at BCCDC, conducting applied public health research that directly informs practice. Her work with the Transformative Health and Justice Research Cluster focuses on advancing the rights and health of marginalized people through evidence-based interventions. She has secured research funding through collaborations with national networks including the Canadian HIV Trials Network and the Canadian Network on Hepatitis C.
