Sofia Backåberg is an Associate Professor at the Department of Health and Caring Sciences, Linnaeus University, and Programme Coordinator for the international Health Science Master Programme. With a background as a physiotherapist, her research focuses on enhancing movement awareness and physical activity in older adults through digital tools. She holds a PhD from Linnaeus University (2016) and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Calgary, Canada (2020).
Her teaching spans undergraduate and master’s levels in nursing and health sciences, emphasizing experiential learning methods like Forum Play. Key research initiatives include the Confidence in Every Step projects exploring digital tools for self-care and the Skeleton Avatar camera technique (SAT) for mobility assessment. She leads the ReAction group, focusing on resilient healthcare and patient activation.
Backåberg collaborates with institutions such as the University of Calgary and Linnaeus University’s DISA e-Health Centre. Her work integrates technology, co-design principles, and interdisciplinary approaches to improve aging-related health outcomes.
