Dr. SoYoung Lim is a tenured Assistant Professor in the School of Commerce at Waseda University, where she joined as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in April 2025 after previously serving as a non-tenure track Assistant Professor from September 2023 to March 2025. Her academic journey includes significant research and teaching positions at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) from 2015-2023, where she served as Research Fellow at the Trade Research Institute, Part-time Lecturer in the College of Business and Graduate School of Trade.
Dr. Lim earned her academic credentials from Sungkyunkwan University, completing her PhD in Insurance from the Graduate School of Trade (2017-2022), Master's degree in Insurance (2015-2017), and dual undergraduate majors in French Language (primary) and International Trade (secondary) (2009-2015). Her international research experience includes a visiting researcher position at the University of Lausanne's Department of Actuarial Science (2019).
Her research focuses on Insurance, Risk Management, Digital Trade, International Trade Risk Management, and Trade Insurance, with particular expertise in comparative analyses between Japan and Korea, ASEAN insurance markets, and the impact of geopolitical risks on insurance development. Dr. Lim's work demonstrates consistent empirical analysis of insurance markets across Asian economies, examining how policy uncertainty, pandemic impacts, and technological changes affect insurance consumers and industry structures. Her recent publications show increasing focus on asymmetric relationships in insurance development and the impact of global economic policy uncertainty on ASEAN insurance markets.
Dr. Lim has received several notable awards including the Kyobo Life Travel Scholarship (2024), The Best Teacher Award from SKKU Graduate School of Trade (2023), Best Paper Award from SKKU Financial Insurance Research Center (2021), and Paper Award in the Graduate Student Division from Korean Academy of Financial Consumers (2017). She serves in leadership positions including Board Member and General Secretary of the International Academy of Financial Consumers (IAFICO), Production Editor for International Review of Financial Consumers, and committee roles in the Asia-Pacific Risk and Insurance Association.
Her teaching portfolio at Waseda University includes Introduction to Risk Financing, Introduction to Risk and Insurance, Introduction to Risk Management, International Trade Insurance, and International Trade Risk Management. Previously at SKKU, she taught Global Sustainability Management, Marine Insurance, Global Risk Management and Insurance, and International Development Cooperation in Finance & Insurance. She maintains active professional memberships including the Asia-Pacific Risk and Insurance Association (APRIA), Korean Insurance Academic Society, and International Academy of Financial Consumers (IAFICO).
