Smith Eivind is a Professor of Public Law at the University of Oslo and Director of the Research Group on Constitutional (Norwegian and Comparative) Studies. He has held roles such as Vice-Chair/Chair of the Division for Humanities and Social Sciences at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (2009–present). He earned a cand.juris (1974) and Dr.juris (1979) from the University of Oslo, followed by an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University. His research focuses on constitutional and administrative law, governance, judicial review, and the relationship between law and democracy.
Key research interests include comparative constitutional frameworks, the borderline between public and private law, independent administrative bodies, and freedom of speech. He has advised governmental inquiries on municipal governance, educational reforms, banking crises, and airport developments. Internationally, he has served as a visiting professor in over 30 countries, including the U.S., France, and across Europe and Asia.
