Dr. Smirti Kutaula is an Associate Professor in Human Resource Management at the Department of Management, Kingston Business School, Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, Kingston University. She serves as the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) Lead and brings over sixteen years of teaching and practitioner experience in the UK and overseas, having previously held a Lecturer position at Birkbeck, University of London.
Her educational qualifications include a PhD from Cardiff Business School, a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Sciences Research Methods (Merit) from Cardiff University, a Master's degree (Gold Medallist), a BA in Economics (Hons) from Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University, and recognition as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Certified Management Business Educator.
Dr. Kutaula's research centers on psychological contracts, strategic HRM, sustainability, and fair trade, with a focus on emerging markets. She investigates how HRM practices influence sustainability performance and ethical consumer behavior, and her work has been published in leading journals such as the British Journal of Management and Journal of Business Ethics.
Her recent publications highlight a strong trend in sustainable HRM and ethical consumerism, addressing critical issues in emerging economies and the integration of fair trade with circular economy principles. She has made significant contributions to understanding the psychological contract in business-to-business relationships and employee-customer interactions.

She has successfully supervised PhD students, such as Reshma Prakash, and secured multiple research grants including the First Grants Scheme (£8579, 2015-16), a combined grant from the Society for Advancement in Management Studies, Kingston University, British Academy of Management and Surrey Business School (£10,800, 2017), and an EU-funded Designscapes project (€5000, 2018-19) focused on developing a mobile app for fair trade product information.
Dr. Kutaula actively collaborates with policymakers and social enterprises on sustainability initiatives, particularly through her work on fair trade and ethical consumerism, which has practical implications for local businesses and sustainable urban environments.
