Sjoerd Kluiving is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Amsterdam Sustainability Institute at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He co-leads the Environmental Humanities Center and specializes in applying earth sciences to archaeology, with a focus on the Anthropocene. His research integrates geological, archaeological, and historical methods to study landscapes and human-environment interactions.
Education:
- PhD in Physical Geography and Geology (University of Amsterdam and University of Alabama)
Research interests include interdisciplinary approaches to landscape archaeology, sustainable transitions, and cultural heritage management. He has supervised multiple PhD students and led projects such as the Horizon 2020-funded TERRANOVA and NWO's Melting Pot. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and sustainable cities.
