Benjamin Campforts is an Assistant Professor in the Earth Sciences department at the Faculty of Science, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research focuses on numerical modeling of Earth surface processes, landscape evolution, and sediment pathways. He holds a PhD in Physical Geography from KU Leuven (2016), where his thesis addressed improving numerical simulations of landscape evolution across timescales.
- Education:
- PhD in Sciences (Physical Geography), KU Leuven, 2012–2016
His work addresses challenges such as sediment transport dynamics, landslides under climate change, and human-land-atmosphere interactions. Key research areas include:
- Anthropocene landscape evolution and environmental sustainability
- Geomorphic impacts of mass movements (e.g., landslides, gully erosion)
- Numerical modeling of sediment transport and landscape evolution
Recent publications emphasize tropical environments, Arctic dynamics, and socio-economic drivers of environmental change. His models contribute to hazard risk prediction, particularly for landslides and sediment mobilization. Campforts collaborates internationally, with projects spanning Africa, the US, and volcanic regions.
Teaching includes courses like Geomorphology and Source-to-Sink Systems, reflecting his expertise in Earth surface processes.
