Siva Vaidhyanathan is the Robertson Professor of Media Studies and director of the Center for Media and Citizenship at the University of Virginia. He is a member of the Graduate Faculty and teaches courses in media studies, data, and democracy. His work bridges academia and public discourse, focusing on the impact of digital platforms on society and democratic processes.
His research interests center on media studies, digital citizenship, intellectual property, and the social and political implications of technology. He explores how platforms like Facebook and Google reshape public discourse, privacy, and democratic engagement. His scholarship combines cultural criticism, historical analysis, and policy critique to understand contemporary digital challenges.
Vaidhyanathan's publications reveal a consistent focus on the tension between freedom and control in digital environments. His books analyze the monopolistic power of tech giants, the erosion of democratic norms through algorithmic influence, and the ethical dimensions of intellectual property. These works span disciplines including media theory, law, American studies, and political science, reflecting a deeply interdisciplinary approach.
He has been a fellow at the New York Institute for the Humanities and a Faculty Associate at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society. He served on the board of the Digital Public Library of America (2012–2018) and contributes regularly to The Guardian, The New Yorker, and public radio. His public engagement includes appearances on The Daily Show, BBC, CNN, and in documentaries such as Terms and Conditions May Apply and Starving the Beast.
Vaidhyanathan directs the Center for Media and Citizenship, which runs a Democracy Lab, produces podcasts, and collaborates with the Virginia Quarterly Review. His advisory and public scholarship roles reflect a commitment to bridging academic research with civic action and media literacy.
