Dr. Simone Sprenger is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Arts, University of Groningen, affiliated with the Semantics and Cognition department. Her research focuses on psycholinguistics, cognitive psychology, and neurolinguistics, with emphasis on idiom processing, bilingualism, ERP studies, and aging effects on language. She teaches courses such as Psycholinguistics and Neurolinguistics and supervises research projects like Amélie la Roi’s study on idiom processing in elderly adults.
Her work explores how cognitive resources interact with linguistic processing, particularly in aging populations and multilingual speakers. She employs methods like ERP, eye-tracking, and pupillometry to study lexical access, pragmatic comprehension, and morphosyntactic processing. Recent projects include cross-linguistic studies of idioms and longitudinal analyses of language attrition.
Key research areas include the mental representation of idioms, the cognitive cost of pragmatic processing, and the impact of bilingualism on executive functions. Her publications span experimental linguistics, cognitive neuroscience, and developmental psychology, with contributions to journals like Journal of Experimental Child Psychology and Acta Psychologica.
Dr. Sprenger collaborates on national citizen science initiatives and has been featured in media for her work on language learning critical periods. She holds a position on the Faculty Board of Semantics and Cognition and maintains an active role in academic outreach.
