Dr Simone Krings is a Researcher at the University of Surrey, affiliated with the School of Biosciences and Section of Bacteriology. Her work focuses on developing biocoatings (or "living paints") that encapsulate viable bacteria for applications in carbon capture, wastewater treatment, and sustainable energy production. Collaborating with supervisors Suzie Hingley-Wilson and Joseph Keddie, she explores the use of halloysite nanotubes and polymer colloids to enhance bacterial viability and functionality.
- Research Interests: Biocoatings, bacterial encapsulation, extremophilic organisms, environmental biotechnology, polymer science, and nanomaterials for microbial applications.
- Publication Trends: Her research emphasizes non-desiccating film formation processes, pore structure optimization, and the use of extremophilic cyanobacteria in synthetic biofilms. Key subfields include oxygen evolution, carbon capture, nitrification, and biofilm permeability.
